Finding objects underwater—especially in limited visibility—is often easier said than done. The PADI Search and Recovery Diver course covers the basics of locating objects underwater— everything from compass navigation and search patterns to learning proper lift-bag procedures in order to safely bring heavy objects back to the surface.

In addition to finding and recovering lost items underwater, the course will also improve your underwater navigation skills overall. Search patterns taught in the course can help when trying to find your way back to an anchor or mooring line at the end of a dive. You can also apply what you learn to other activities, such as treasure-hunting dives at a local lake or swimming hole.

What You’ll Learn

The course starts with a knowledge development program that describes the techniques you’ll practice underwater, followed by four open-water dives during which you’ll practice searching for objects of varying sizes underwater. You’ll even have opportunities to practice safely recovering heavy items with a lift bag. As a final test, each student will plan and execute a mock search operation. The minimum age for the PADI Search and Recovery Diver course is 12. In order to take the course, you must be an Advanced Open Water Diver (or Junior Advanced Open Water) or an Open Water Diver with and an Underwater Navigation certification.
